United through its venture capital arm said this week that it will invest up to $37.5 million in the development of the largest clean fuel production facility. This will now make it the first U.S. airline to commit to funding a biofuel refinery which is a major step in taking the renewable fuels use in the aviation industry seriously. Hopefully, once this is established it will force other airlines to develop similar endeavours.
"Right now, one of the biggest barriers to increasing supply and lowering costs of sustainable fuel is that we don’t have the infrastructure in place to transport it efficiently, but Next’s strategic location and assets solve that problem and provide a blueprint for future facilities that need to be built," said United Airlines Ventures president Michael Leskinen. "We believe this investment will not only bolster Next’s ambitions and create near-term solutions to expand our SAF supply, but further demonstrates our commitment toward producing SAF at the scale necessary to decarbonize the aviation industry."

Airbus has signed agreements with Xiamen Airlines, Zhejiang Loong Airlines and Colorful Guizhou Airlines to promote the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for commercial flights in China. The partnership was announced during the Airbus Press Conference at the 14th China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition. With these agreements, Airbus and Airbus’ Chinese operators further support the green aviation strategy in China. The SAF for the above mentioned commercial flights is produced locally from used cooking oil by SINOPEC Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Company, a state-owned manufacturer in China. The Chinese SAF made by the only certified Chinese facility is also used for delivery flights from Airbus Tianjin. Since October 2022, Airbus Delivery Centre in Tianjin has offered customers the option of a five percent SAF fuel blend for all single-aisle A320neo Family and A350 wide-body aircraft delivery flights..

SAF is a sustainably-produced aviation fuel made from feedstocks ranging from used fat, oil and grease to municipal and forestry waste. Compared to fossil jet fuel, SAF has been demonstrated to result in an up to 80% reduction in CO2 emissions across the entire SAF lifecycle. Therefore, it is considered as a key enabler to contribute to the decarbonization of aviation. The 14th Five-Year Plan for the Green Development of Civil Aviation issued by CAAC states that it is necessary to implement a low-carbon development strategy, promote breakthroughs in the commercial application of SAF, and strive to achieve a SAF consumption of over 20,000 tonnes by 2025. Xiamen Airlines has become the newest Airbus customer in China by placing a firm order for 40 A320neo family aircraft this September. Zhejiang Loong Airlines operates an Airbus passenger aircraft fleet made up of 64 A320 family aircraft. Colorful Guizhou Airlines has a fleet of 8 A320neo family aircraft. All three airlines are committed to sustainable development in their daily operations.

Neste is now partnering with Airbus to collaborate on SAF development. The announcement was made at the Airbus Sustainability Summit today. Part of the issue with carbon reduction is the ability to develop large quantities of SAF on a level that is easily accessible like how regular fuel is available. "Neste is at the forefront of accelerating the aviation sector’s journey to a more sustainable future. That journey requires cooperation across the industry’s value chain," said Neste vice president of renewable aviation Thorsten Lange. "This collaboration with Airbus connects a pioneer in the aerospace industry with a leader in renewable fuels. The combined knowledge and expertise of the companies will help advance the use and availability of SAF as a means of transitioning aviation towards more sustainable energy sources and reducing the climate impact of aviation."

Recently we had global warming protests at the Hamburg Airport with several young people cutting a hole in the fence of the airport and entering the main runway. By gluing themselves onto the runway, they were able to to stop flying operations on the airport for some time, until the federal police was able to remove them from the concrete and to arrest them. Since then, the security measures have been increased conciderably.

Protesters gluing themselves on the Autobahn, main crossings in bigger cities and on expensive arts in the museums are a big thing in Germany at the moment. How about one of those?

First FBO in Georgia to offer SAF is Hill Aircraft. The FBO is situated at Fulton County Executive Airport (KFTY) and has ordered its first round of SAF for its customers. This shipment is sort of strategic as a major event in the area will be happening and the FBO wants to take advantage of the situation. The Peach Bowl college football game is to be played at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta on New Years eve. Some 3700 GAL of blended SAF will be delivered by World Fuel Services. It isn't a huge amount so customers flying in intending to use the blended SAF are asked to order in advance.

irbus and Air New Zealand’s partnership on hydrogen-fueled aviation is entering a new phase by welcoming the country’s key “hydrogen ecosystem” players. The resulting consortium will pave the way to further act upon New Zealand’s – and also the wider aviation industry’s – collective ambition towards decarbonization. Ultimately, the partners will evaluate the means of deploying hydrogen hubs at airports, starting with the case study at Christchurch. If successful, commercial hydrogen-powered aviation could be extended to cover the entirety of New Zealand’s domestic network. The additional participants to the consortium include Christchurch International Airport, Fortescue Future Industries (FFI), Hiringa, and Fabrum. New Zealand, with its large share of renewable energy sources in its energy mix, is a model for a proactive, forward-looking ecosystem with a huge potential for low-carbon hydrogen production. To complement this, the consortium partners have a shared vision to support New Zealand to pioneer the commercial deployment of hydrogen-powered aircraft.
