Joby To Commence Passenger eVTOL Flights By End Of 2026 Joby Aviation will be one of the first eVTOL airframers to commence passenger flights in the United States. However, the flights are part of a coordinated program called the eIPP (eVTOL Integration Pilot Program) put on by Texas Department of Transportation. They are leading one of a number of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) projects that were highlighted back in March. Joby is one of a number of eVTOL airframers that are participating in the program. Coincidentally, the companies participating are all airframers who are advanced in their eVTOL programs, namely Joby, Archer Aviation, Beta Technologies and Wisk Aero. It must be noted that this is a Texas-based trial program that is calling for regional flights connecting Dallas, Austin and San Antonio before expanding the region to the more congested Houston area.
The passenger flight trials are supposed to commence later this year as part of the eVTOL Integration Pilot Program but Joby is actually endeavoring to start flights this month (September) under the program. Joby's aviation program is mature and the company currently has five aircraft flying and reportedly another 12 aircraft in various stages of production.
Although Joby commencing initial flights is known to be reality, they undertake that Joby has not announced the routes or operating schedule for its initial September flights. “These partnerships will help us better understand how to safely and efficiently integrate these aircraft into the National Airspace System,” FAA Deputy Administrator Chris Rocheleau said when the projects were announced. “The program will provide valuable operational experience that will inform the standards needed to enable safe Advanced Air Mobility operations.”
Even though Joby is aiming for FAA certification, the other processes outside of Joby have to also be in place to allow for safe operation of eVTOL traffic. As the eIPP seeks to establish partnerships among the federal government, state and local agencies and aircraft developers this will help to provide a pathway for the integration process. Agreements, airspace coordination and other required approvals must be completed for each project for successful operational flow in the future.
