With eVTOLs development in advanced stages there is need for the supporting vertiport.skyport infrastructure to keep up if this new modern and future mode of urbanized transportation is going to take off. To this end, Joby Aviation has partnered with REEF. REEF Technology and Neighborhood Property Group is the full name of the entity and they have been enlisted to develop takeoff and landing sites for Joby Aviation's aerial ridesharing service expected to be launching in 2024. "This is a landmark deal on Joby’s path to building a transformational ridesharing service in our skies," said JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO at Joby Aviation. "NPG and REEF have an unbeatable network of sites across the US and we’re excited to be working with them to identify sites that will become the backbone of our future service. Parking structures are ideal locations for us as they allow us to deliver our customers as close to their destination as possible, while minimizing any local impact and reducing the need for building new infrastructure." There is no indication how their Skyport may look but below is an example of utilizing the roof of a multi-level car park for a skyport.

Oshakosh Wittman Airport to build first eVTOL Vertiport in the Americas. It will be coming to the site that holds the EAA Air Venture. They anticipate that it will become operational by this Fall. Community leaders and airport administrators are partnering with Volatus Infrastructure LLC to build a landing pad, charging station, and passenger terminal specifically designed to accommodate the nascent eVTOL aircraft industry. It will cost around 500,000 to build. It is an offsite pre-built structure which suggests why the timeline for completion is so quick.

EVE announces the first North American UAM simulation. Hold your horses before you jump ahead of yourselves. It is going to be utilizing helicopters powered by Blade Air Mobility. Eve will conduct its Chicago, Ill., UAM simulation over three weeks, starting with ground tests on September 12th and passenger flights on the 14th. These tests will provide the knowledge to operate the UAM infrastructure in the future. Eve will perform the ground tests at Vertiport Chicago, an existing downtown heliport facility, simulating services, infrastructure, and equipment requirements for the eVTOL. In the UAM infrastructure, a vertiport is an area of land or a structure used for the landing, take-off, charging and operation of eVTOL vehicles.

Over in Australia, Melbourne is expected to be the first area there to perhaps have a vertiport. Skyportz unveiled the Contreras Earl Architects-designed vertiport, which was slated for Caribbean Park in Melbourne’s east. Skyportz chief executive Clem Newton-Brown said, "with the development of a vertiport in a business park we are breaking the nexus between aviation and airports". The federal regulator Civil Aviation Safety Authority recently released a roadmap on the introduction of advanced air mobility [AAM] in Australia, and it is anticipated that electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft could be commercially certified as soon as 2024.

Volatus Infrastructure, reports that it has signed an agreement with Bellefonte Airport located in Pennsylvania to build a public use FAA-compliant electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vertiport with up to eight landing pads including a charging station at each pad. The company says the vertiport is expected to be operational later this year. "A project that started out as a way to get fans to Penn State games without sitting in traffic on US 80 and State Route 322, has turned into what will become the center of an eVTOL ecosystem for the East Coast," said Grant Fisk, Volatus Infrastructure Co-Founder. "We realised that Bellefonte airport is within 90 miles of all the major cities so it just makes sense to expand this location which will lay the foundation for the eVTOL infrastructure ecosystem for the East Coast." The design will be modular in nature for the vertiport which allows for quick on-site construction as well as scalable growth to expand with the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) industry as it grows. Bellefonte Airport it says, will start with the vertiport and a single landing pad with a charging station that has the ability to scale up to eight landing pads with charging stations as the need for additional space grows.

amd.sigma-strategic airport development GmbH, a Berlin based subsidiary of Munich Airport International, has published a prototype design of a battery-electric inter-regional airport.

"The idea for an inter-regional eAirport was inspired by a research project in Germany funded by the government, which aims to design and eventually build two prototypical vertiports. The project involves partnerships with Munich Airport International, Airbus, Bauhaus Luftfahrt, and several universities to explore Advanced Air Mobility (AAM)" says the abstract to the report which continues:

"Following extensive research, the team determined that exploring the potential for using electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft to transport individuals from urban areas to nearby regional airports – located within a radius of 100km from the city – was a promising direction to pursue. These regional airports – many of which are former military airfields – are either currently in operation or abandoned and have the potential to serve as intermodal nodes for eVTOL and small electric short and conventional takeoff and landing (eSTOL/eCTOL) aircraft. The latter type of aircraft has a longer range than an eVTOL, but still requires a runway."

Siemens and Skyway have agreed to work together to determine the electrical and digital infrastructure needed to support vertiport operations. "The scope of collaboration involves both companies researching energy demands of vertiports and developing sustainable electrical supply, standard charging processes, and a “system of systems” to support aircraft operations. Innovation around vertiport infrastructure will be critical to the future scalability of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) flight

"A main objective of the collaborative effort is to develop vertiports. This includes researching, developing, planning, and being part of the construction and operation of them, with each company bringing its own strength and experience to the effort. Skyway has vast knowledge of airspace mission planning and management, air traffic navigation, and unmanned aircraft operations, and Siemens has infrastructure expertise in electrification, vehicle charging, and facility operations.

"Together, the two will work together to design and engineer a universal eVTOL charging process by evaluating the charging, power, and software requirements to ensure reliable and efficient operations. In addition, Siemens and Skyway will collaborate on innovative ideas to standardize overall vertiport planning and design and reduce energy consumption."
