A Piper Lance flying in foggy weather in central South Dakota yesterday crashed into the blade of a wind turbine, killing the pilot and three passengers. The FAA has confirmed that the 1978 Piper PA-32R-300 struck a blade of the wind tower outside Highmore, South Dakota, in poor weather, but offered no explanation as to why the airplane was so low when it was still several miles from the nearest airport. Two separate airplane crashes in Central Florida, one in Daytona Beach and one in Merritt Island, claimed the lives of four people Monday night. In Daytona a student and an instructor died in a fiery crash shortly after takeoff from Daytona Beach International. Witnesses say the Cessna 172 they were flying appeared to lose engine power directly after takeoff and that the airplane attempted to make a turn back to the runway but crashed into a field on airport property. Approximately 70 miles to the south another crash claimed the lives of two others when their Liberty XL2 went down in a residential area in Merritt Island. The XL2 landed in a backyard approximately 10 feet away from a house. Both occupants, 47-year-old John Brian Kish and 64-year-old Kenneth Allen Marks, were killed in the crash, but no one on the ground was injured. Marks was interested in purchasing the airplane from Kish, and the two men had taken the airplane up for a test flight. (Flying)

The US NTSB said Boeing should consider modifying flight controls on the 777 in response to an Asiana crash in San Francisco last July that killed three people and injured more than 180.
Boeing said it was still assessing damage to six 737 fuselages after a train carrying them derailed in Montana last Thursday. "Cars involved in the derailment carrying assemblies for the 777 and 747 have been inspected and their content appears undamaged," Boeing said on Monday. Nineteen cars in a 90-car train derailed on their way to the plane maker's factories in Washington state from Spirit Aerosystems. (Reuters)
A P-51 Mustang crashed shortly after takeoff from the Durango-La Plata County Airport in Colorado on July 4, killing the two pilots on board. The Mustang's owner, John Earley, was reportedly receiving flight instruction from Michael Schlarb when the rare airplane went down just outside the airport perimeter fence. According to eyewitnesses, the 1944 P-51D had just gotten airborne when it suddenly banked left and crashed near a road. (FLYING)
Reports are that another Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 MH17 has crashed. This time near the Russia/Ukraine border. The burning wreckage has been found and all 295 persons onboard apparently have perished. It seems, for now, that the aircraft was shot down, whether intentionally or accidentally, that isn't known as yet. http://edition.cnn.com/video/?/vide...ia-plane-crash-in-ukraine.cnn&video_referrer=

And yet another casualty... An Air Algerie airliner is believed to have crashed in the Sahara, en route from Burkina Faso to Algiers. Flight AH5017 had 110 passengers on board, including 51 French citizens, as well as six Spanish crew members. Unconfirmed French media reports suggest the plane crashed in either central or northern Mali. The plane was chartered from Spain's Swiftair. Heavy storms were reported at the time of the crash.
