Brazilian manufacturer Embraer has updated on additional details of the planned aerodynamic enhancements for its current-generation E-Jets. They say the enhancements are expected to generate fuel-burn savings of up to 5%. Speaking at its Sao Jose dos Campos plant on 12 September, Luis Carlos Affonso, chief operating officer of Embraer's commercial aviation division, outlined the proposed changes to the wing-tips of its E-175. The modification will be longer than the winglets installed on the current iteration of E-Jets and will additionally extend from the wing at a shallower angle, resembling the outer wing of Boeing's 787. "It is almost a continuation of the wing," says Affonso.

Embraer Executive Jets Customer Support and Services Advances AHEAD System

Embraer Executive Jets announced today, during its press conference at the NBAA Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition 2013, that Customer Support and Services has introduced significant advances to its AHEAD (Aircraft Health Analysis and Diagnosis) system, which now includes support for the Legacy 500 and Legacy 450 executive jets.

AHEAD delivers optimized maintenance and operational support through the integration of onboard aircraft systems, technical publications, and maintenance tracking system. AHEAD enables expedited return to service through live information made available to maintenance teams, the Service Center network, and the Embraer Contact Center. AHEAD’s in-flight advanced notification ensures effective troubleshooting, supported by prompt 24/7 customer support. The advances in AHEAD deliver performance improvement, leveraging a state-of-the-art technological platform, full access to service through mobile devices, and seamless integration with CAMP, Embraer’s preferred maintenance tracking provider.

The new AHEAD solution was architected to support the Legacy 500 and Legacy 450 executive jets, and enabled the migration of Phenom 300 and Phenom 100 customers into the latest version. Since the first flight of the first Legacy 500 prototype, Customer Support and Services has acted as the first customer and deployed the new AHEAD solution to validate onboard aircraft systems integration, and to ensure that customer support engagement during unscheduled events is agile, comprehensive, and effective. “We are prepared to support the entry into service of the Legacy 500 and Legacy 450 executive jets,” said Edson Carlos Mallaco, Vice President, Customer Support and Services – Embraer Executive Jets. “And we are thrilled to further enhance the support for our Phenom customers. We will continue to advance our support and service solutions to ensure that our customers experience the best operational support.”

Embraer, the world's third-largest commercial plane maker, posted a 19 percent drop in third-quarter profit on Thursday as it delivered smaller, less profitable aircraft. EBITDA, fell 7 percent to USD$156.4 million, net income fell to USD$52.9 million. The weaker product mix dragged revenue 8 percent lower despite nearly stable production costs.

EBITDA as a share of net revenue came to 12.1 percent, little changed from a year earlier, when the restructuring of a customer's financing weighed on results.Embraer's 11.7 percent EBITDA margin in the first nine months of the year is far short of an official target of 13 percent to 14 percent for 2013. The EBIT margin, another profitability gauge that includes depreciation and amortisation, equaled 6.4 percent to September, well below the 9 percent to 9.5 percent target.

Bombardier and Embraer will split an order by the newly-merged parent company of American Airlines and US Airways for 90 76-seat regional jets. Coming only three days after American and US Airways completed their historic merger, the orders signed today add another piece to the ongoing re-fleeting of the US regional jet market, but also leave questions unanswered about the future of American Airlines Group subsidiary American Eagle.

“Now that we’ve closed our merger with US Airways, we can deliver a top-tier regional product that offers a first class cabin, main cabin extra, an in-flight wi-fi,” says Kenji Hashimoto, senior vice-president for regional carriers with American Airlines.
