Doha-based carrier Qatar Airways has given the nod that it is interested in going-ahead with a large order from Boeing involving as many as 100 modern commercial jets. The Oneworld carrier has ordered 30 Boeing 787-9s and 10 777-300ERs, and has also signed a letter of intent for up to 60 737 Max 8s. Qatar Airways chief executive Akbar Al Baker announced the order at a press briefing in Washington DC, alongside Boeing Commercial Airplanes chief Ray Conner and the US deputy secretary of state Tony Blinken. If all options are exercised the deal would be worth 18.6-billion dollars in current list prices of the individual aircraft types. "Boeing has proven to be a valuable partner, and today's announcement is testament to our appreciation of the quality of their product and their dedication to providing world-class customer service," says Al Baker.

Airbus is looking at next month to have the first flight for the first Airbus A350-1000 variant. The A350-1000 is the longest variant of the in the A350 model and is essentially a stretched version of the A350-900. Notable differences with the 1000 models are the main gear, having triple-bogey wheels similar to that of the 777 from Boeing. The powerful twin-engine aircraft has been penned to fly in the fourth quarter of this year but no definitive date was set but Airbus is definitely looking to have the first flight done in November. Three aircraft are expected to makeup the test fleet for the 1000 test program. The first aircraft is powered by twin Rolls Royce Trent XWB-97 engines. 195 orders have come in for the A350-1000 from various carriers around the world. The first is due to be delivered to the first carrier in the second half of 2017.

Kuwait Airways unveils its new livery on a Boeing 777-300ER. The livery is now a modern sketch of the blue and white livery with a modern interpretation of the airline's bird on the tail. It is a much cleaner appearance, and they just have oversized uppercase lettering for the name 'KUWAIT' and Arabic script. The engines get a splash of blue as well. The 777-300ER is also the first of the type for the airline and is the start of fulfillment of a 10-unit B773 order made back in late 2014. It showed off the carrier’s new colour scheme during a roll-out event of the twinjet (9K-AOC) held in Seattle. All the 773s are General Electric GE90 powered. It is also part of the airlines fleet modernization plans which includes the acquisition of A320neos and A350-900s.

Freighter company UPS has made a commitment to order up to 14 Boeing 747-8F aircraft. The deal is quite surprising but definitely a good deal from Boeing's perspective given how the B747-8 model has been doing overall. The order is for 14 aircraft but that also includes options for another 14 if UPS needed them.
"These aircraft are a strategic investment for increased capacity for UPS customers around the globe," states Brendan Canavan, president of UPS Airlines. UPS will use the 747-8s to "upsize our network in both new and existing markets", Canavan adds. It is the first jumbo freighter order for the Atlanta-based carrier since it cancelled a deal to buy 10 Airbus A380 Freighters a decade ago.

Emirates has retired the last of its Airbus A330 and A340 aircraft, leaving its fleet entirely composed of A380s and Boeing 777s. The Dubai-based airline says the last aircraft of its formerly 29-strong A330 fleet was built in 2002 and accumulated around 60,000h. Emirates operated A340-300s, -500s and -600s. Since January 2015, it has phased out 18 A330s and five A340s. A further 25 aircraft are to be retired across 2017 and 2018 to keep fleet "modern and efficient", the airline indicates. At present Emirates Airlines has 85 Airbus A380s and 160 Boeing 777 aircraft (in several variants). Of course the airline has quite a few more aircraft on order including the under development Boeing 777X and of course more A380s.

The first Airbus A350-1000 test aircraft took to the skies this morning successfully and returned to the ground without incident. The aircraft is powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines which pushed the jet to get airborne at 10:42 local time in Toulouse. Now that the first flight is over, the airborne testing campaign will continue for the largest variant in the A350 model. This will now firmly start the contest in the very large twin engined widebody market with this aircraft expected to typically seat around 366 passengers but can be fitted to carry as many as 400 passengers. The aircraft's range is being marketed to be in the region on 7,950 nautical miles.
