The first customer installation of Tamarack Aerospace’s Atlas active winglet system was recently completed last week on a Cessna Citation CJ1. The aircraft which is in operation for private charter firm JetPingu was the candidate. The said aircraft is based at Switzerland’s Grenchen Airport. The installation took 400 man hours and was performed at the Textron Aviation Service Center in Zurich. The new winglets should allow the pilots to note less fuel burn because of the reduced drag. A testbed aircraft suggests as much as 25% reduced fuel burn can be obtained.

Her performance data make her a very nice sports aircraft for all pilot and most important for us, a nice trainer aircraft. We will place orders for at least two or three factory new aircraft with the addition of TCAS, TAWS, DME and ADF. This a/c is perfect for the profiency training of our young copilots, for our aircrews with desk jobs in the company to get more stick time and as a short range shuttle for staff members.

Btw. Recently I asked one of our very young copilots to fly me to the Isle of Sylt with one of our Soloy Cessnas. A 45 min VFR trip from Hamburg to Sylt. During the flight, I observed him, completely relying on the GPS based map display and using the autopilot. I asked him to switch off the map display and fly manually for the rest of the flight by using his paper map.

Guess what happened, the poor young man was swetting like hell and got lost in plenty VMC. I think he hated the day, he accidently met his boss in the hallway :). After landing, I bought him a drink and apologized. But that was one of the reasons, we are buying those JTA Skyhawks. These young guys graduate from their ATP course with their frozen ATP (means licence is limited to copilot duties), fly basically IFR only and if lucky, get one landing a week. The best training and gaining confidence is putting two of these young copilots in one of those JTA and task them to fly once around Europe in one week and come back with a minimum of 35 flying hours after this week.

That is exactly what my superior officers did with us young Lt during my military time. In bad weather periods in northern Germany, they gave each of us a F-104 G and send us all over Europe with the order to fly at least twice a day. "Come back on Friday with a minimum of 10 flights. Destinations to Your discretion." Guess where we ended up, in southern France Italy, Spain, Greece and Portugal.

I still miss my life as a fighter pilot!!

It is a strategic move as they plan to up the rate of production for new models like the Latitude and the soon to come Longitude.
