Mount Tavurvur on East New Britain Island in Papua New Guinea erupted a couple of hours ago and created a gigantic ash and lava cloud that is reaching up to 60,000 feet. As air traffic is limited in that area it will only have a limited affect on air traffic.

Iceland volcano: Alert downgraded to orange, airspace reopened to some traffic

    Updated August 29, 2014 23:05:37

Iceland has downgraded its volcano alert from red to orange after a small eruption that is no longer considered a threat to aviation.

Airspace has reopened below 5,000 feet in a radius of 10 nautical miles around the site of the eruption after earlier being closed to air traffic.

"A three-nautical-mile radius and 5,000-foot ... restricted flight area around the volcanic activity set by the Icelandic Transport Authority remains in effect,"
the Meteorological Institute said in a statement.

Things that make you go ...hmmm.

Activity Brief: This strong surge of magma rise has continued for 14 days with no easing at all, it has increased. A mag 4.8 and 5.2 in the last 3 hours and around 1,300 quakes in the last 24 hours. Crust continues to rift apart at an alarming and unprecedented rate over a large area of east central Iceland and shows no sign of slowing, it instead appears to be slowly accelerating as well as quickly spreading north as well. Magma continues to rise in cavities opening through the resulting separating crust and failing surface areas. As a result, it's felt by experts that an eruption with full force from a fissure is unlikely to develop while the crust keeps increasing its volume of space opened, under the surface, to contain this rising magma. It is unclear what will occur when the crust stops moving apart and magma is free to rise much faster. There are numerous seismic signs of probable new fissure growth near Askja caldera. By far the largest quakes are still focused close to the north side of Bardarbunga and its icesheet area near to where the first few days of events unfolded after August 16th. Due to the high displacement features now observed on the surface, it is considered that the volume of magma intruding may be several times larger than earlier rates. The scale of the pre-eruption sequence has shocked senior geologists, and large numbers are currently enroute to Iceland to observe the expected eruptions.

    Iceland Aviation Alert is Red

A significantly larger fissure eruption has been in progress for the past three hours. A low pressure storm is in the area of SW iceland and any upper level ash releases will blow to eastern Greenland then down in northern Russia for a couple of days.

Numerous signs of small under ice eruptions have been identified, notably near Bardarbunga's SE crater wall, plus between it and the current visible eruption in open ground. The sub-glacial eruptions have so far not been energetic enough to melt and break through the 400 to 800 m thick ice. Under ice eruptive activity has started slowly over a larger area. It is steadily increasing with each cycle.

Fresh eruption: 60 m high lava fountains

"... The effusive eruption in Holuhraun that started early this morning is producing 50 - 60 meter high lava fountains, according to a volcanologist at the site. The active fissure is 1500 - 1800 meter long, considerably larger than the fissure that opened Friday morning.

According to Armann Hoskuldsson, volcanologist at the University of Iceland´s Institute of Earth Sciences, who is at the site, ... The eruption is estimated to be 10 to 20 times bigger than the one Friday morning, and looks "robust" says Dr. Hoskuldsson. ..."

@ JFNews, I'll finally be resuming regular activities this week so this will be the last volcano watch update posted. Have a great week.

Xiamen Airlines took delivery of its very first wide-body jet, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, on Friday.

The airplane is outfitted for a passenger count of 236; four first class, eighteen business class, and 214 economy seats. First class is configured 1-2-1 across with the Zodiac Apollo seats. Each is lie-flat with 6.4 feet of leg room, and a 15.4 inch wide screen. Business is also set up in a 2-2-2 across. The eighteen seats are split between a cabin of two rows and second, smaller cabin of only one row. The product is Zodiac’s Aura Lite. Economy will be arranged in a 3-3-3 configuration with 33 inches of pitch each and a 9-inch touchscreen. All seats appeared to have at least one power & USB port. The IFE system will run on Panasonic’s eX3 system.

Initially I said I didn't like it because of the above shot, poor quality in a hangar, I saw a subsequent shot, of it in the open and I have to say it actually looks pretty decent!

An earthquake struck the region around Iceland's Bárðarbunga volcano on Sunday while fissures in the area continued to spew lava but none of the ash that could hamper air traffic. The earthquake occurred at 0708 GMT and reached a magnitude of 5.4, making it one of the bigger quakes in the area in central Iceland since significant tremors began on August 16, often producing thousands of quakes per day.

"There was also another quake, magnitude 4.6 at 0330 (GMT) in the night," said Bergthora Thorbjarnardottir, geologist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office. "Seismic activity underneath Bárðarbunga volcano is still ongoing but remains steady," she added. Lava from the fissures around Bárðarbunga has so far reached the surface only on land that is not covered by ice, whereas an eruption under an ice cap may be explosive and result in an ash cloud that could under certain circumstances disrupt aviation.

A cloud of abrasive ash from the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, in a different region of Iceland, closed much of Europe's air space for six days, stranding tens of thousands of passengers, after an eruption under the ice cap. The ash warning level for aviation related to the current fissure eruptions remained at orange, the second-highest level on a five-level scale, after several brief upgrades to red in recent weeks.

    “I got my wings!”

Our first 787 takes shape in Boeing’s Everett, Washington, factory. The airplane is in Position 1A, where the Boeing team joins the mid-body and the wings.

Qatar Airways has taken delivery of its first Airbus A380, after a three-month standoff with the plane maker over the quality of its cabin fittings. The Gulf carrier took delivery of the first of 10 A380s at a ceremony in Hamburg and plans to introduce it on flights between Doha and London Heathrow.

It had previously rejected the first three aircraft after declaring itself unhappy with the cabin fittings as it vies with other Gulf carriers to offer luxury interiors on the world's largest passenger jet, but said the issue had now been resolved.

COMAC, China's biggest domestic aircraft manufacturer, will sell 20 ARJ21 regional jets to Comsys Aviation Leasing, a small Chinese aviation leasing company. The deal, whose price tag has yet to be determined, will be finalised at an air show in Zhuhai later this year, said Lune Wang, vice general manager at Comsys. The ARJ21, China's first locally built regional jet, aims to compete against Embraer and Bombardier. The plane, which seats about 90 passengers, is not yet in commercial service.

COMAC also is making the self-developed narrow-body C919.

The Shanghai-based company says that it has initial and confirmed orders for 258 ARJ21s, with orders for the C919 standing at 400. Comsys Leasing has 34 aircraft in operation, but plans to double the size of its fleet in the near future, Wang added.

American's first Airbus A330 painted in the new American livery took to the skies today. Also, the second Boeing 757-200 has been painted in the new livery. This one came from the US Airways side of the merger. The first was an American Airlines 757.
