Texas A&M University has broken ground on an FBO complex at the school-owned Easterwood Field Airport (CLL) in College Station. While the Brazos Valley facility has not received much attention in decades, an ambitious $10.5 million project aims to transform it into a state-of-the-art regional airport. A new private aviation facility accounts for $6.5 million of that investment. Its project features a 8,500-sq-ft executive terminal with dedicated crew lounge, multiple conference rooms, office space, a catering kitchen and staff training areas. Also in the works is a new 40,000-sq-ft hangar, bringing total storage space to 75,000 sq ft. The new building will accommodate the latest large-cabin business aircraft when it is completed in early 2018. Managed by Astin Aviation, the FBO is the lone provider on the field, which sees approximately 120 operations a day. (AIN)

Signature Flight Support opens a new FBO in Seattle. The FBO opened at the Boeing Field/King County International Airport (BFI). The $11.5 million facility has 6,250-sq-ft executive terminal and full front-desk services. There are pilot lounges as well as boardrooms. This is not the only one in Seattle though as there is one at the Seattle Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to the south of this one.

A new hangar is being constructed at the Stuart Jet Center in Florida. When it is completed in November, it will add some 320,000 square feet of covered space. Company president Dan Capen said, “These new hangars, complete with office space, will give us the space we need to accommodate the growth of Stuart and our customer base, particularly has we head into the winter months,” when seasonal traffic picks up.

More than 150 guests including customers and industry members attended the event. “Jet Aviation San Juan now delivers industry-best FBO and flight-management services to customers at this increasingly busy destination and one of the most convenient airports for international travel in the region,” said David Paddock, senior vice president and general manager, Jet Aviation Regional Operations USA. “It’s the only FBO in the Caribbean with an on-site, full-service U.S. Customs and Border Protection terminal that conveniently provides all of the customs, immigration and agricultural services our international customers need.”

Jet Aviation celebrated the opening of a new FBO (fixed-base operation) at Hanscom Field at Boston/Bedford on August 22 with a ribbon-cutting performed by the first customer to enter the building.

The two-story, 12,000-square-foot facility opened for business officially after the red ribbon was cut by Bob Braceland, director, Executive Aircraft Operations at Raytheon, who served as the ceremonial first customer. The opening was followed by a catered lunch for Jet Aviation’s tenants, customers and staff at the FBO.

“Opening this state-of-the-art facility is a big step into the future of premium service for our customers and the community,” said John Langevin, vice president of Jet Aviation FBO Operations in North America. “We’re proud to complete this building that was designed and built to improve safety and efficiency, as well as be more protective of the environment by meeting the standards of the United States Green Building Council.”

The FBO opening followed a grand-opening event in June for the adjacent new 40,000 square-foot hangar. The FBO features two customer lounge areas, two pilot shower rooms, a snooze room and a pilots’ lounge with two privacy rooms. There are also two conference rooms with full video-conferencing capabilities. Now that the FBO team is occupying the new space, the old FBO building will be offered for lease.

“The expanded FBO at Boston/Bedford is among many recent and upcoming improvements to Jet Aviation’s global FBO network,” Langevin said. “The new FBO at Washington Dulles International Airport opened in April and the newly-branded Jet Aviation San Juan FBO at Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport in Puerto Rico opened in July.”

At 600 sq m (6,460 sq ft), the new FBO—which, like Jet Aviation’s facility at Dubai International Airport (DXB), is operated in partnership with the Al Mulla Business Group—is six times larger than the company’s previous location at Al Maktoum International. With European style and branding similar to the company’s other locations, such as at Zurich and Geneva, it features a trio of 40-sq-m (430-sq-ft ) customer lounges along the main corridor, a conference room, crew lounge, separate prayer rooms for men and women, shower facilities, operations center and a designated waiting room for chauffeurs. The terminal also houses a large duty free shop. “We are very pleased to begin operations at Dubai South and look forward to welcoming customers to our new FBO, where they can expect to receive the highest quality services in the comfort and style to which they are accustomed with Jet Aviation,” said Stefan Benz, senior vice president of regional operations for EMEA and Asia. Jet Aviation hosted an official groundbreaking for its new wide-body hangar project in Basel earlier this afternoon. The event also acknowledged the support of all the many contributors to the project. Jet Aviation’s new 8,700 square-meter, state-of-the-art hangar is scheduled to go operational at the end of 2018. After two years of planning, negotiations and preparation, Jet Aviation was pleased to invite the EuroAirport management, government representatives from the region, local suppliers, authorities and the media to the official groundbreaking ceremony of its new wide-body hangar in Basel.

“We have a long history of handling major modifications and completions at Jet Aviation, and we are fully committed to investing in the latest technologies that support the highest quality and safety standards for our customers worldwide,” said Jet Aviation Group President, Rob Smith. “This investment also reinforces our commitment to Basel – our home base. We will create new jobs for the local community and help to further strengthen Basel as a hub for European aviation.”

Suitable for wide-body projects up to Boeing 747, the new hangar is being built to meet increased demand for wide-body completions and refurbishments. The hangar will provide an additional 4,550 square meters of hangar space to accommodate a number of wide- and narrow-body aircraft simultaneously. The project also extends the tarmac by 5,000 square meters while adding 2,000 square meters for shops and offices. To maintain capacity and capabilities throughout the hangar project, the company has leased additional hangar and shop space. It has also built a pathway to ensure employees have proper access to all of the hangars.

Sheltair debuts a new hangar at FLL

The official and grand opening of a new hangar at FLL Airport for Sheltair happened yesterday. It was a significant addition to the FBO and cost them 30 million dollars. Should be worth it as it added some 145,000 sq ft of hangar and office space to the FBO. They (Sheltair) are one of four service providers on the field. The addition combines with the rest of facilities for Sheltair at FLL to a total of more than 457,000 sq ft of hangar, office, and FBO terminal space on the west side and 91,000 sq ft of hangars and offices on the north side of the airport.

As you would expect, where ever the Super Bowl is held in the United States, the principal FBO nearest to the stadium sees bumper activity in terms of executive movements. This time, the Super Bowl was held in Minneapolis and FBOs in that state cashed in on the jetset crowd that flew in for the big game on Sunday. For example, at Thunderbird Aviation at the Flying Cloud Airport, they had nearly 1000 movements between Saturday and Sunday.

The FireBlade Aviation FBO at the O.R Tambo International airport in South Africa opened in 2014 but only recently received its first international executive flight. It was a momentous occasion for the FBO and now you can get Customs service at the FBO. “We are excited to service international movements, which will complement our current domestic aircraft movements and enable Fireblade Aviation to fulfill its intended potential,” said company CEO Jonathan Oppenheimer.

“Our main terminal at O.R. Tambo International will be freed up for additional capacity when commercial business aviation can use the Fireblade terminal,” the airport authority, Airports Company of South Africa, noted in a statement. “There is also a genuine need for the premium services offered by Fireblade at the largest airport in Africa, since the lack of these facilities had affected our reputation and brand.”

Signature Flight Support completes the renovation of an FBO in Virginia. The FBO is located at the state's Charlottesville Albemarle Airport and is the only service provider there. The company says it spent around 2 million dollars refurbishing the 10,000 sq foot terminal. "Our recent investment in Signature Charlottesville is directly representative of our commitment to engage in capital-improvement projects throughout our worldwide network of fixed-base operations," said Signature president and COO Maria Sastre. "Every single location in our network strives to provide an extraordinary experience, and the renovation of our existing FBO facilities represents a key component of our strategy to drive long-term value for our stakeholders."

Flexjet will have its own private terminal at Dallas Love Field in the near future. The area is currently being renovation and will stand alongside the recently renovated TAC Air Terminal. By June 2019, the facility should be opened for operations. "At our core, we are an aviation company, and the ability to tie a portion of our future to somewhere that has such historical significance in aviation is a perfect fit for us," noted company CEO Michael Silvestro. "It not only gives us a significant presence at a key airport, but it also brings our entire Dallas team together in what will become one of our flagship regional facilities."

New Hampshire FBO goes green with the entire roof being covered in photovoltaic cells. The 218.1-kilowatt photovoltaic system, completed last month, is the largest such solar system in the city of Lebanon. “We love the idea that we can offset a large part of our carbon footprint through solar,” said Jason Archambeault, the FBO’s co-owner and COO. “We believe following socially responsible business practices is just the right thing to do, and using a local solar company to do the work also supports local jobs.”
