Airbus announced today that the CFM International LEAP-1A powered Airbus A321neo has gained certification from both EASA and FAA. This comes after the other engine option for the type aircraft, P&W 1100G was certified. The certificate lists the take-off power of the Leap-1A as 32,160lb-thrust, versus 33,110lb-thrust for the PW1100G variant of the A321neo.

Boeing has set the roll-out date for their Boeing 737 MAX 9. The aircraft will roll-out for the first time on March 7, which isn't too far from now. The company is expecting to have their first MAX 8 iteration enter service in less than two months with launch customer Norwegian. As for the MAX 9, the first flight is carded for sometime in April with entry into service in 2018. The MAX 9 is essentially a 2.6-meter (8.5-foot) stretch of the MAX 8. Only 220 orders so far have accumulated for the MAX 9 which isn't as astounding when you look at orders for the competing A321neo. Overall though, the MAX family has over 3,600 orders. The Max family is powered by CFM International's LEAP-1B powerplants.

Boeing has announced that they will have the first flight of the Boeing 787-10 Dream)Liner on March 31st. The maiden flight will be operated by a 787-10 equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines. This is not the only powerplant available to the -10 variant as General Electric GEnx powerplants are also on offer as an option to customers. Remember the Boeing rolled out the -10 back in February just ahead of President Trump's visit to the North Charleston assembly factory. To date, just about 149 orders have been made for the largest variant of the Dream)Liner family. Entry into service for the -10 is anticipated in the first half of 2018.

Airbus has wrapped up the high-elevation and hot testing on their Airbus A350-1000XWB model. The 1000 is the longest variant in the trio of XWB aircraft from Airbus. With the objective of conducting a ‘High and Warm’ flight test campaign to check aircraft and engine performance in high-altitude, warm and humid conditions, the A350-1000 MSN071 test aircraft flew first to Bolivia before completing its tour in Colombia and then returning to Toulouse, France, after 10 days of flight and ground tests.

The flight test campaign took place at three different airports:
-- Cochabamba at an altitude of 8,300ft (2,350m)
    -- La Paz at 13,300ft (4,054m)
-- Barranquilla at sea level, with temperatures ranging between 8°C and 32°C

All three A350-1000 flight test aircraft (MSN059, MSN071 and MSN065) are engaged in the ongoing Type Certification campaign, during which the aircraft is pushed to extreme limits well beyond what they should ever face during normal in-service operations.

JetBlue Airways has switched its first three Airbus A321neos to the A321ceos, in what it calls a "prudent" move as issues continue to be reported with the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engines that will power the airline's aircraft. The New York-based carrier will now take 11 A321ceos next year, instead of three A321neos and eight A321ceos as originally planned. JetBlue chief financial officer Steve Priest says: "We just felt that swapping the neos for the ceos between 2018 and 2019 is just prudent, [it's] good contingency planning for us." He does not elaborate further on the engine issues, but calls P&W a "great partner" of the airline. "Pratt is confident of resolving the issues," says Priest. (FG)

Spirit Airlines will no longer take any Airbus A320neos in 2018, becoming the latest airline to adjust deliveries after widely-reported problems with the Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan engine. The ultra low-cost carrier says it has converted two of four A320neos for delivery in 2018 to A320ceos. These aircraft will be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2017, says chief financial officer Ted Christie. The other two A320neos have been pushed into 2019, he says on an earnings call. (FG)

Kenya Airways made a bit of a shakeup at the top of the company by bringing in a Polish CEO. Yes, the new CEO of this African airline is the former CEO of Polish carrier LOT Airlines. Sebastian Mikosz stepped down as CEO from LOT in August 2015 and has now made his way to Kenya Airways replacing Mbuvi Ngunze. The African carrier says it spent six months searching for the next CEO to run the company.

Boeing has halted flight testing on the Boeing 737 MAX as a result of what is described as an engine disc issue. It halt is more out of caution than anything else. Boeing confirmed Wednesday that it has suspended 737 Max test flights “out of an abundance of caution” after engine supplier CFM International notified it of a potential “quality escape” involving low pressure turbine discs in Leap-1B turbofans delivered to the airframer. In the mean time, MAX production will continue and deliveries are still anticipated for May.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 resumed testing on the 12th of May. The program was halted on May 10th for cautionary inspection for a possible engine flaw. All seems well now and the program is now back on track. “Today we resumed some 737 Max flight activities. Regulatory agencies support this action,” Boeing said in a statement on 12th May. CFM notified Boeing last week that one of two suppliers for the rotor disc in the low pressure turbine of the Leap-1B engine may have a manufacturing flaw and that prompted Boeing to halt the program.

After the very brief grounding for the MAX 8 program Boeing delivered the first customer-bound example. The launch customer was Malindo Air of Malaysia. The formal delivery was completed quietly at Boeing’s customer delivery center in Seattle, with no public events or fanfare accompany the delivery.
